Former IBF featherweight champion Billy Dibb returns to ESPN This Friday for the first time since suffering a split decision loss to Evgeny Gradovich back in March of this year.  Dib had won 14 fights in a row prior to that loss, and now the 27-year old Australian hopes to get back on track with a televised win this Friday in Hartford, Connecticut.

Dib is 35-2 with 21 knockouts, he is rated 11th according to boxrec.com and despite being out-muscled and out-worked against Gradovich, he is still a very good boxer with good hand speed who mixes up his attack well and moves in and out effectively. Dib’s opponent in this fight is Connecticut native Mike Oliver, a 33-year old with a record of 25-3 (8 KO’s) and an “unranked” rating according to boxrec.com.

Oliver is a quick-handed southpaw, who counters well and digs to the body effectively, but he has been stopped three times (most recently against Juan Manuel Lopez last October) and his last 4 victories came against 3 fighters currently unranked, and one fighter now rated #387.

I think this is a good “bounce-back” opponent for Dib.  Oliver is a quality opponent with a lot of experience (he fought over 300 fights as an amateur), and he likes to mix things up, but he doesn’t have threatening knockout power, and he has had some durability issues in the past.

In all, I think this will be a decent scrap, but Dib is simply a tier above Oliver and I think the outcome will reflect that.  While he did not look very good in his last outing, I think he will be able to get off first and land combinations more successfully against an opponent that is not as aggressive.  Therefore, in a closer than expected fight I think Dib will pull out the victory by a 3-4 point margin.
