By Dan Ambrose: Henry Ramirez, the trainer for the recently knocked out Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s), wants him to be a lot more careful this Saturday night against the hard hitting welterweight contender Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA.
Lopez was recruited from the light welterweight division to face the middleweight-sized junior middleweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last September and it ended as you would expect a fighter who was fighting someone three divisions heavier than him with Lopez getting knocked out in the 5th round.
Ramirez now wants Lopez to be a lot more careful in this fight on Saturday against Maidana because he doesn’t want Lopez to be run over like he was in the fight with Canelo.
The difference here, though, is that Maidana and Lopez are about the same size; whereas with Canelo, Lopez was fighting a guy nearly the weight of a light heavyweight and he never stood a chance.
Ramirez said to RingTV “He’s got to resist and an all-out war. It’s OK to slug it out, but it has to be in spots. He can’t stand there all night. He has to be like Mike Alvarado I the rematch with Brandon Rios. Mike boxed when he had to.”
I doubt that Lopez will be able to curb his slugging instincts. You know the old saying: “once a slugger always a slugger.” Lopez is too hard wired in for slugging for him to back off and start trying to box.
There’s little doubt that if Lopez tries to trade with Maidana, he’s going to get knocked out and real quick. I think Lopez’s 9th round stoppage win over Victor Ortiz last June was the worst thing that could have happened to Lopez because it seems to have made him think that he’s a slugger when in reality he’s a light welterweight with marginal power who eaten his way to welterweight.
