The fight will air live on Spanish-language network Telemundo (11:35 p.m. ET) along with a bout involving featherweight contender Orlando Cruz (20-2-1, 10 KOs) of Puerto Rico, who is close to a mandatory world title shot. Cruz, who made worldwide headlines in October when he became the first active boxer to announce he is gay, will face an opponent to be determined.

The 37-year-old Guzman (33-1-1, 20 KOs), a former junior featherweight and junior lightweight world titleholder from the Dominican Republic, suffered his only professional defeat in his last fight. He faced Khabib Allakhverdiev for a vacant junior-welterweight title in November in Sunrise, Fla., and lost an eighth-round technical split decision after suffering a knee injury on an accidental foul and was unable to continue.

"Guzman worked had in his last fight and fell short due to injury," said Acquinity Sports chief executive Gary Jonas, Guzman's promoter, who made a deal with Zabala to place the bout on his show. "He is a two-time world champion who knows what to do in the ring very well. This is a very interesting fight. I feel Guzman will win this fight and get another shot at Allakhverdiev and his world title."

Mosquera (32-2-1, 17 KOs), 33, of Panama, is also a former junior-lightweight titleholder. He won a world title in 2005 by outpointing Thailand's Yodsanan Sor Nanthachai on the John Ruiz-James Toney heavyweight title fight undercard at New York City's famed Madison Square Garden.

Mosquera made one successful defense before being knocked out in the 10th round by the late Edwin Valero in 2006. Mosquera did not fight again after the loss to Valero until returning in 2011, in part because of time he spent incarcerated. Since his return, Mosquera has won eight consecutive fights.

Acquinity Sports has announced that an agreement has been reached regarding an Interim World Boxing Association super lightweight title fight, featuring a pair of past world champions, Joan “Little Tyson and Vincente “El Loco” Mosquera, tentatively scheduled for May 31 at a venue to be determined.

Guzman (33-1-1, 20 KOs), a 1996 Dominican Republic Olympian now living in Miami, suffered his first loss as a professional this past November, dropping an eighth-round technical decision to Khabib Allakhverdiev for the WBA championship (Danny Garcia is the WBA Super 140-pound champion). Guzman suffered a knee injury when he was tossed to the canvas, leading to the fight being halted by the referee Luis Pabon. Guzman’s promoter, Acquinity Sports, requested an immediate rematch with Allakhverdiev, based on the mishandling of the event by Pabon. Instead, the WBA granted an Interim title fight between WBA #5 Guzman and WBA #9 Mosquera, and the winner earning a regular WBA title shot with Allakhverdiev.

“Guzman worked had in his last fight and fell short due to injury.” Acquinity Sports CEO Gary Jonas said. “He is a two-time World Champion who knows what to do in the ring very well. This is a very interesting fight. I feel Guzman will win this fight and get another shot at Allakhverdiev and his world title.”

Guzman captured the World Boxing Organization (WBO super bantamweight crown in 2004, stopping Agapito Sanchez in San Diego. Guzman successfully defended that title by way of a 12-round decision over Fernando Beltran.

In 2006, Guzman added the WBO super featherweight title belt to his collection by winning a 12-round decision from Jorge Rodrigo Barrios. Two title defenses against Antonio Davis and Humberto Soto, in which Guzman won by 12-round decisions, before the crafty Dominican moved up in weight class to lightweight and eventually the super lightweight division.
Including the aforementioned fighters, Guzman has beaten a virtual Who’s Who of world-class fighters between 122 and 140 pounds, such as Ali Funeka, Javier Jauregui and Fabio Daniel Oliva.

“I am happy to see Guzman get another shot,” Acquinity Sports Vice President of Operations Henry Rovalta added. “His fight with Allakhverdiev ended in an injury. Khabib won a split decision bit thjere were still four more rounds to go. Guzman won’t be looking past Mosquera . We know that he’s tough but Guzman will be ready.”

WBA #9 Mosquera (32-2-1, 17 KOs) has won his last eight fights in a row, since being knocked out for the only time in his professional career by the late Edwin Valero in 2006. Panama-native Mosquera won the WBA super featherweight championship in 2005, taking a 12-round decision from defending champion Yodsanan Sor Nanthachai in New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden.
Mosquera made one successful title defense, a year later against Jose Pablo Estrella in Argentina, by way of a 12-round split decision. After losing to Valero in his following fight, Mazquera was inactive for 4 ½ years.

Commonwealth welterweight king Denton Vassell is known as ‘The Quiet Storm’ but he has designs on causing serious carnage when he puts his belt on the line in a title unifier with British champion Frankie Gavin at Liverpool Olympia on Friday night.

It promises to be one of the best domestic match-ups of the year, a classical boxer versus banger bash between two unbeaten prospects who both have their eyes cast on the major international belts further down the line.

Remaining tickets priced at £30 and £60 are available from Eventim on 0844 249 1000 or www.eventim.co.uk or the Liverpool Olympia Box Office at www.liverpoololympia.com

Watch the whole bill live and exclusive on BoxNation, the Channel of Champions, live and exclusive from 7pm on Sky Ch.437/Virgin Ch.546.

Seemingly sculpted from black marble, ex ABA champ Vassell has won 20 straight as a pro, with ten opponents ruined before the final bell. A banker by profession, there is little cerebral about his ring manner; he comes to seek and destroy!

What do you recall of your early years, growing up on The notorious Miles Platting estate in Manchester? To what extent was boxing responsible for keeping you straight?

I was one of 19 children, mostly guys. My mum is Brazilian and my late dad, who was Jamaican, was a very respected guy locally. He was a fantastic cook and I’ve always been brought up on natural foods. I seldom bother with supplements or stuff like that.

Miles Platting and Ancoats is a very tough area and I could certainly have gone a bad path. There’s many different ways people make their livings around here and not all of them are legal! There were a lot of drugs and robberies going down and several of my mates went that way. It was tempting; quick, easy money and I got into trouble with the police a few times myself.

Eventually, around the age of 15, I discovered boxing. That was really helpful but my mum and dad also deserve a lot of credit for ensuring that I didn’t stray too far from the right path. I realised that I had a skill that could offer me an alternative route. A very wise person once told me: ‘With great sacrifice, comes great reward.’ I opted to follow my dream in the ring.

Despite your late start, in 2006 you were crowned senior English ABA welterweight champion in just your 19th fight. What qualities enabled you to be so successful, so quickly as an amateur?

I’d put it down to the intense way that I trained and my sheer will to win. From the start, I embraced the old school training methods, just like Marciano and Ali trained.

I was a very active kid, naturally athletic. I always dreamt of being a p.e teacher or an actor in action films. I was always running and previously I’d done a lot of weight and fitness training. I just started the boxing to loosen myself up a bit. So I was already pretty powerful and had good speed and stamina.

I’d also had loads of ‘tear ups’ on the cobbles as a teenager before I started the boxing and, though I’d not developed the skills, I was a natural street fighter. I always had loads of heart and learnt I could take a dig. I enjoyed the adrenalin of street fights yet could always maintain my composure. I’m very stubborn and a very sore loser; horribly competitive.

In the amateurs, from quite early on, I was matched against guys with 60, 80, 100 bouts and they really should’ve ‘done me in’ but I only lost two of my 21 bouts. I always viewed it that opponents only had two arms and two legs, same as me, and that my will and fitness would exceed theirs. I really trained like an animal. My philosophy was ‘Kill or be killed’. I’d give my last breath to win a fight.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics were still two years away. Were you not tempted to hang around and shoot for a medal?

Not really, no. The amateurs were never my thing. At the Olympics, they had the computer scoring and that was never going to suit. I always had more of a pro style.

Away from boxing, you also work as a banker with HSBC. Does that compliment or hinder your ring career?

Compliment, I think. My parents always encouraged me to do well at school and I ended up with eight or nine GCSEs including A Star grades in Art and PE. Occasionally, the banking can drain you mentally but you exert no physical energy sat behind a desk, opening and closing accounts. By the time the bank closes, I’m fresh for the gym.

HSBC only sponsor teams rather than individuals but they’ve been very supportive. I usually get three weeks unpaid leave before a fight. If bigger fights surface in future I may have to go part-time or knock it on the head altogether but it’s working well at the minute.

You’ve been trained throughout your professional career by the vastly underrated Bob Shannon. What are his qualities?

I swear the man is an absolute legend, in my eyes. He’s hugely experienced, having been in the game since he was an amateur boxer himself. Plus his dad before him was a top trainer so there’s great knowledge passed through the family.

We’re best friends and have been out for meals together. Bob’s always there for me. Since my dad died, he’s become my father figure. My dad didn’t like boxing but hugely respected Bob. I also have to give some thanks to Jimmy and Lee, my amateur trainers at the Fox ABC, for getting me started.

Physically, everybody knows that Bob’s regime is very, very intense. But he also inbreeds a tough strong mind and the heart of a champion. He gets into your soul, puts incredible belief into his fighters.

And Bob can adapt his teaching to all styles. In addition to steering me to my Commonwealth title, he took Prince Arron to the Prizefighter trophy and British light-middle title. He took Matty Hatton to the European crown and a world title challenge. You couldn’t find three more contrasting fighters than me, Hatton and Arron. The guy’s a legend. Full stop.

You made steady but unspectacular progress during your first three and a half years in the profession then announced yourself when you saw off Lee Purdy in a 12 round classic for the vacant Commonwealth belt in fight number 15.

You had to come through a few uncomfortable moments but that result seems far better since Purdy’s recent elevation to world class.

Maybe but the truth is I only had three weeks notice for that fight and one of those was the final ‘tone down’ week when you don’t really do any training. I still threw over 1500 punches. All the conditioning work over a number of years paid off.

I was under a lot of pressure because it was my first 12 rounder plus it was around the time when my dad wasn’t very well. That was really tough, made it harder.

In round seven, when I’d turned southpaw, I got a bit lazy and Lee caught me with big clean right hand. I felt my legs ‘go’ but I refused to go down. When I got back to the corner, I apologized to Bob then jumped straight back at Purdy from the start of round eight.

I made a lot of mistakes but in that fight I showed my will and showed I could take a dig. In the end I won very convincingly. (Unanimously by six, five and one round on the official cards).

That was a leading contender for 2010’s Fight of the Year. Subsequently, in the following two and a half years, you defended the belt just twice, outscoring Namibia’s unbeaten Bethuel Ushona and Australia’s Sam Colomban. Both were quality fighters but you struggled to get up for those fights and were widely accused of labouring. Fans were crying out for a rematch with Purdy, who’d bagged the British title. Why didn’t it make sense to you?

There was nothing for me to gain. It was basically a case of me giving Lee a second chance. I also had a few personal difficulties, most notably my dad passing away around that time. My aunt actually passed away the same morning as the Colomban defence but, out of pride, I went through with the fight. I was a true professional and still got the win despite the fact I was hurting inside.

Anyway, just because nobody in the UK really knew much about Oshuna or Colomban, it didn’t mean they weren’t good fighters. They’d beat plenty of the top guys over here and would give Lee Purdy and Frankie Gavin hard nights.

Lee’s had a few good wins since we fought but I have to say if I’d been offered a voluntary challenge at a world title Like he was against Devon Alexander, I’d have done my absolute hardest to make the weight, then rip the champion’s heart out. I tweeted Purdy ‘Good luck’ but he didn’t really throw one decent shot.

Still, his career. I guarantee when my time comes, I’ll show the Yanks what I can do. They’ll like my style.

You certainly clawed back a lot of lost ground last time out when you destroyed Oldham’s previously unbeaten Ronnie Heffron in six rounds at the Manchester Arena last November. Were you surprised the fight proved so easy and so short?

Not really. 2012 was a nightmare year for me on a personal front. Lots of things accumulated. Because of bereavements, I’d had to forfeit two holidays that I’d paid for in full. I had contractual problems and briefly my boxing licence had run out. All those things put me back.

The bookies had me down to lose. But people didn’t understand that, though I’d not fought for a year, I hadn’t been rusting. I was still in the gym every day. I’d been sparring constantly.

My natural game is to go to war and that’s personally what I’ll choose to do most times. But the best way to fight Heffron was to use my speed and box him; beat him to the punch. I then slaughtered him with uppercuts and made a big statement. I showed I can go back foot and counter punch effectively.

Despite that impressive showing, you’ll again enter as a 2-1 underdog for your British-Commonwealth unifier with Frankie Gavin on Friday. What’s your assessment of Gavin?

I’ve seen bits of Frankie. He’s just a boxer with two arms and two legs, same as me. People are saying it’ll be Frankie’s speed against my power, I say expect the unexpected!

I train to win. Us boxers all put in so much hard graft for just a 36 minute crash….or less! Bob Shannon breeds confidence and you can’t enter that ring with any doubts.

The boxing ring is my realm, my world, my house. I’m there to fight. All I will say is that Frankie can run but he can’t hide. There’ll be a fight and one will come out a winner. Me!

Regardless of your opponent, how important is it to you to win the Lonsdale Belt? If you win on Friday, do you see yourself hanging around at domestic level to attempt to hang onto it outright?

It’s a gorgeous belt no doubt and I can’t wait to see a photo of it around my waist. But it’s just one of many belts I aim to win.

This fight’s more about stepping up to greater things. Frankie Gavin is an obstacle in my way and I’m going to go through him.

It’d be nice to have it to keep but I’d vacate and go for the European or world titles if they were offered. Welterweight is probably the toughest division in both Britain and the world at the minute, littered with awesome fighters. Respect to every one of them but I definitely see myself having a career at world level. I really want to represent Britain in the US. They’ll love me over there.

The true warrior should always be ready to enter the ring with all his tools sharp. In boxing, you never know what shots are going to come your way. I absolutely love all the hard work in the gym and I’m ready 24/7 for whenever an opening presents itself.

I don’t want to sound like a bad person but I just really love to fight!

While weigh-ins are generally a mere formality, this one could be a bit more important than most. That is because Broner has moved up two entire weight classes from lightweight at 135 pounds to welterweight at 147 pounds. His weight is definitely something to keep an eye on as it could affect his stamina against a guy like Malignaggi who is used to fighting at 147 pounds.

If Broner is nervous, he certainly hasn't shown it to this point. He has initiated the brunt of the trash talk. With both men trading verbal barbs in recent weeks, it wouldn't be a surprise to see tempers flare on Friday.

Here is your complete guide to the Broner vs. Malignaggi weigh-in, including live streaming video as well as what to watch for on Friday and in Saturday's fight.

Keys to Broner vs. Malignaggi

What Effect Will Trash Talk Have?

The 23-year-old Broner is no stranger to trash talk, but he has seemingly taken it to another level as he prepares for the biggest fight of his career. Whether it's a defense mechanism or simply his true personality, Broner hasn't been shy about speaking his mind as evidenced by Thursday's press conference.

While Malignaggi doesn't usually engage in such shenanigans, he has stooped to Broner's level to some degree and joined in as well. Malignaggi said that while he takes some of the blame for the trash talk that has been hurled back and forth, Broner is what is wrong with boxing right now, according to East Side Boxing:

It’s gotten a little bit crazy, we’ll admit that. I can take some of the blame, but I can’t take all of it. I can only apologize for my end, but at the end of the day, this is how the creation of Adrien Broner happened, in my opinion. They put everything that’s wrong with boxing in one room, did everything that’s wrong with boxing in that room and gave birth to Adrien Broner and you people are eating it up.

Despite what the trash talk suggests, both men are professionals who should be able to put it behind them. Once they step into the ring, it will be all about proving who is the better boxer rather than the better talker, so look for them to put everything to rest on Friday.

Can Broner Go 12 Rounds?
While Broner is nine years younger than Malignaggi and appears to be in impeccable shape, there is concern among boxing fans about Broner's ability to go 12 rounds against the champion. Not only could adding 12 pounds cause Broner to tire earlier than he has in other fights, but Malignaggi recounted something Broner told him before a fight against Daniel Ponce de Leon back in 2011 at the press conference:

You remember in that locker room at Wild Card Gym a couple of years ago when you were getting ready to fight (Daniel) Ponce (de Leon) and we were in the locker room and you were all nervous about going the distance? You think I forgot that conversation you had with me? I had to explain to him how to go 10 rounds without mentally killing yourself. He gets to the fight and throws about 16 punches for 10 rounds and gets the decision. My man, you’re going 12 Saturday. I’m going to beat your ass.

That 10-round decision victory over Ponce de Leon was the longest fight of Broner's career as he has only gone the distance on four occasions. If he goes wire to wire against Malignaggi, it will have to be in 12 rounds, so Broner may enter uncharted territory on Saturday night.

How Will Malignaggi Handle Broner's Power?
What Broner lacks in experience, he more than makes up for with explosive punching power. Broner is 26-0 and 22 of those victories have come by way of knockout, so he is always looking to put his opponent on the mat. Doing that to Malignaggi seems like an extremely difficult proposition, but Broner is determined to make it happen:

All I want to say is, I HAVE to put on a hell of a show on Saturday night. Like I said before, I’m not here to bad (mouth) Paulie. You’re a great champion, you’re a great Italian, I’m dead serious.

I’ll be a three-time world champion on Saturday at the age of 23. With that being said, let Paulie talk his little BS. At the end of day, I’m knocking him the (expletive) out. He’s never been knocked out.

While two of Malignaggi's four losses have come by way of technical knockout against Ricky Hatton and Amir Khan respectively, he has never actually been knocked out. His trainer threw in the towel in the Hatton fight and the referee stopped the Khan fight, so Malignaggi has proven many times that he is unwilling to quit. He may have no other choice if Broner comes out firing, though.

With a perfect 31-0 record and 26 wins coming by way of stoppage, WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia has one of the best knockout percentages among current beltholders. But unlike some big KO artists, who brashly overwhelm their opponents, Garcia works with a more methodical approach.

His style is not the ego of the big slugger. It is the humble pride of the craftsman.

Now 25, Garcia's resume has been built up with patience and calculated risk. In March of 2011, he captured the NABF and NABO featherweight titles by stopping fellow unbeaten contender Matt Remillard in 10, knocking him down three times along the way.

Since then, Garcia has faced a mix of fellow contenders, like Rafael Guzman and Jonathan Victor Barros, along with experienced journeymen, like Mauricio Pastrana and Juan Carlos Martinez. Entering his January of 2013 title challenge against Orlando Salido, he had won eight straight by stoppage.

If Garcia entered the Salido fight as a promising contender, he left that night as an unquestioned world champion. Salido was a well-traveled veteran, who had suffered numerous tough losses early in his career before developing into a world-class prizefighter. His record since 2008 was 8-1, with his only loss coming against Yuri Gamboa.

Going into his defense against Garcia, Salido was widely considered the top featherweight in the world. The ease with which Garcia handled him was shocking, even to many who had been tagging Garcia as a future star. He knocked Salido down four times, en route to a one-sided technical decision.

Garcia's march from prospect to unbeaten world champion has been among the most dominant and methodical of recent years. But he has received far less hype than some young champions such as Adrien Broner or Saul Alvarez. While Garcia's record is glitzy, his personality outside of the ring is businesslike and humble.

I interviewed Garcia by phone last week and found him to be the same thoughtful and soft-spoken fighter I have seen in interviews on YouTube. Perhaps the most fascinating thing I found out about him is how slowly his boxing ambitions developed.

This is a guy who grew up in a great boxing family. His current trainer, older brother Robert, won a world title when Mikey was still in grade school.

Yet the young Mikey Garcia never assumed such glory in the ring was necessarily waiting for him:

I didn't consider a career as a kid. I've been around it my whole life, and grew into it, but I never pictured it as something that could happen for me, just because it did for Robert...it was great when Robert was the champion. All my friends would ask for his autograph, and he'd come to my class. It was nice to be able to show him off to my friends, but I didn't think about boxing for myself then.

Garcia's modest, down-to-earth approach to his sport has remained in place, even as his stock has soared to the championship level. In promoting the fight, he has reached out to fans at the grassroots level on Twitter, inviting the public to open-sparring sessions and frequently engaging fans one-on-one:

The impulse to take nothing for granted is obvious when Garcia talks about his upcoming opponent, Juan Manuel Lopez. Once among the hottest stars in the sport himself, Lopez was stopped twice by Salido, in 2011 and 2012, his defensive shortcomings fully exposed. Few observers give him much of a chance against Garcia.

But Garcia himself is the last one who would look past Lopez. “Lopez is very dangerous at this point in his career for anybody,” Garcia told me. Adding:

He understands what it's like to be at the top and lose it. He knows if he beats me, he gets everything he had back. He's going to be willing to risk getting in close against me because he's confident in his own punches. I think he'll be more dangerous. He's learned from those two losses.

Nobody can deny that Lopez has explosive, fight-ending power. He has a record of 33-2, with 30 career KOs. I can remember a time, not that long ago, when Lopez-Gamboa was one of the fights that every fan wanted to see.

When I talked to Lopez last week by phone, it was clear that he was hungry for this opportunity and the leg up that it represented for his stalled career. He agreed with Garcia's assessment of himself.

“If I can beat a guy at the top who has looked as great as Mikey Garcia," he said, "everything I lost comes back to me.”

That's the stage Garcia has reached in his own career. A win over him really means something now. In boxing that makes you a star, no matter how humble you remain.

On Saturday, June 8, in Montreal, Canada, light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson returns to action for the first time since losing by TKO to Andre Ward last September when he faces hometown sensation Adonis Stevenson. This fight is for the WBC belt and will be broadcast live on HBO, with a co-main event feature of Yuriorkis Gamboa and Darley Perez.

Dawson has been at the top of the 175-pound heap for most of the past six years since he beat Tomasz Adamek by wide margins in February of 2007, handing the future heavyweight contender the first loss of his career. Stevenson is one of the most exciting punchers in the sport.

MONTREAL (April 10, 2013) – The most dangerous super middleweight in the world, Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (20-1, 17 KOs), is moving up in weight to challenge World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight champion “Bad” Chad Dawson (31-2, 17 KOs) on Saturday night, June 8, live on HBO Championship Boxing from the famed Bell Centre in Montreal.

Dawson vs. Stevenson is co-promoted by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) and Gary Shaw Productions, a co-presentation of Mise-O-Jeu and Videotron.

The boxing event is included in the Canada Formula One Grand Prix activities, which will give visitors to Montreal that weekend for the race additional entertainment options, highlighted by a great night of world championship boxing the day before the race, at the centrally-located Montreal Bell Centre area where most visitors will be staying.

So today's big boxing rumour is that Chad Dawson could face Adonis Stevenson on the Lucian Bute/Jean Pascal under-card which will take place in May. Due to Dawson's unsuccessful attempt in the Super Middleweight division last year, the fight will most likely take place in the Light Heavyweight division where Dawson is still the WBC champion.

I think this is a very risky fight for Dawson. He is coming off a bad TKO loss in his last fight, some fighters never recover from those kind of TKO losses. He hasn't fought in over six months, there is bound to be some ring rust which could effect his stamina. Not only that but Adonis Stevenson is a very skilled boxer with a huge punch and very good stamina.

Stevenson will take on Darnell Boone next Friday, Stevenson's sole career loss is to Boone, and if he avenges that loss he will be full of confidence going into a fight with Dawson.

Today at 2:30 p.m. EDT on BoxNation in the UK and ARD in Germany, Marco Huck makes the ninth defense of his WBO cruiserweight title in a rematch against Ola Afolabi, Robert Stieglitz defends the WBO super middleweight title against Nader Hamdan, and the vacant European heavyweight title will be decided between Kubrat Pulev and Alexander Dimitrenko.

Bad Left Hook will be here for the entire show, with live, round-by-round coverage and immediate post-fight results and analysis. If you missed our preview of the entire show, including prospects Edmund Gerber and Dustin Dirks also in action, make sure you read that.

This will serve as part one of our big-time two-part live coverage today, as of course tonight at 9 p.m. EDT, we'll bring you live results of the Mayweather vs Cotto card from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, live on HBO pay-per-view in the States and BoxNation in the UK. We hope you're a bad enough dude to join us for every round of boxing on this Cinco De Mayo, because, well, otherwise it'd get a little boring here in the live thread.

It is official! The fight between WBO Titlist Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) and interim champion Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs) is going to be staged on June 8 in Berlin, Germany at the Max-Schmeling-Halle. “I’m glad that we have finally arrived at this point. I will be fighting in my backyard,” said an excited Huck ahead of the highly anticipated championship clash.

The first time the pair have met inside the ring was back in December of 2009 in Ludwigsburg, Germany. Back then, the prodigy of Coach Ulli Wegner won a hard fought battle after twelve rounds by unanimous decision with scores of 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 to his name. After Huck’s brief spell as a heavyweight in a world title fight against WBA King Alexander Povetkin and with Afolabi recapturing the interim title, they met once again on May 5 of last year. The rematch in Erfurt, Germany again went the whole distance and the bout ended in a majority draw (114-114, 114-114 and 115-113), resulting in Afolabi keeping his WBO mandatory position.

Originally, Don King won the purse bid to Huck vs. Afolabi III, but the right to host the fight was handed down by the WBO to Sauerland Event. King failed to finalize necessary details within a set period. Hence Team Sauerland, the second highest bidder during February´s purse bid will now put on the show instead.

Sauerland Event’s Managing Director Chris Meyer: “After that was all set, we quickly came to an agreement with Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, who is looking after the interests of Afolabi. The fight will take place in Berlin on June 8.”

WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck is excited about fighting in his home city of Berlin. “Ola Afolabi is a tough nut to crack. However, he won’t be causing me that much trouble again. I will prove who is the best in Berlin,” promised the 28-year-old.

Tickets for the big fight night at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany are available from May 3 onwards.

By Dan Ambrose: Henry Ramirez, the trainer for the recently knocked out Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s), wants him to be a lot more careful this Saturday night against the hard hitting welterweight contender Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA.

Lopez was recruited from the light welterweight division to face the middleweight-sized junior middleweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last September and it ended as you would expect a fighter who was fighting someone three divisions heavier than him with Lopez getting knocked out in the 5th round.

Ramirez now wants Lopez to be a lot more careful in this fight on Saturday against Maidana because he doesn’t want Lopez to be run over like he was in the fight with Canelo.

The difference here, though, is that Maidana and Lopez are about the same size; whereas with Canelo, Lopez was fighting a guy nearly the weight of a light heavyweight and he never stood a chance.

Ramirez said to RingTV “He’s got to resist and an all-out war. It’s OK to slug it out, but it has to be in spots. He can’t stand there all night. He has to be like Mike Alvarado I the rematch with Brandon Rios. Mike boxed when he had to.”

I doubt that Lopez will be able to curb his slugging instincts. You know the old saying: “once a slugger always a slugger.” Lopez is too hard wired in for slugging for him to back off and start trying to box.

There’s little doubt that if Lopez tries to trade with Maidana, he’s going to get knocked out and real quick. I think Lopez’s 9th round stoppage win over Victor Ortiz last June was the worst thing that could have happened to Lopez because it seems to have made him think that he’s a slugger when in reality he’s a light welterweight with marginal power who eaten his way to welterweight.
